Fetislam Fortress

The Fetislam fortress is located on the very bank of the Danube on the western edge of Kladovo. It consists of a Small and a Large Fort. A small fort, which makes up the upper and lower coastal area, was built in 1524. The size of the fortification is 96 x 45 meters. A large fortification built between 1717 and 1739. The average size is 480 x 260 m. There is a 13-30 m wide trench around the fortification, which ends with a wall-contaescarp made of crushed stone. The main one, the Varoš gate in the southern rampart, the Orospi gate in the southwestern rampart, and the Danube Gate on the northeastern side are still well preserved today. Fetislam fortifications were in use until 1867. when the Turks handed them over to the Serbs.
The Fetislam Fort revitalization project connected several different levels offered by the historical and spatial context with the aim of achieving a unique ambient entity in the following:
• The historical details of the complex and some objects in it have been restored and reconstructed. The original morphological structure, which in the meantime lost its third dimension, was partially restored, and the complex sank into the surrounding space. The historical urbanity of the space, especially its verticality, was affirmed.
• Fortification details (bastions and rampart routes) were ideally reconstructed.
• To emphasize urbanity, analogies from the immediate environment were used in a convenient way, and together they form the same historical context.
• The restoration of the historical area of Fetislam created the conditions for modern life to take place in a historically correct environment.
• Fetislam has created an attractive public space and an original form of architecture where different activities can take place in a creative way; artistic, from archaeological history, entertainment, sports and leisure activities, economic, as well as specific services.
